DISASSEMBLING VIOLENCE

There are too many guns in the inner-city and too little opportunity for inner-city artists. With that in mind, SFMoMA partnered with the state government, repurposing confiscated, illegal weaponry and turning them into inspiring artwork.

The Manual

Below is an intro guide to the project.

The Launch

For many artists and museum-goers, it was their first time seeing and touching a firearm in person.
Because of that, we created spaces within the museum for local artists and museum-goers to experience first hand what it felt like to hold a fire-arm. We then invited them to create something symbollic to the feeling of what it meannt to carry something so deadly and all too pervasive in our country.

INSIDE THE STUDIO.

We highlighted local art first to amplify their voice and their communities.

Artists’ books are sold in-store.
